Q: What year did you turn professional?
In 2014.
Q: What can a golfer expect from a lesson with you?
Some honest coaching. We’ll get to the route of your problems and make lasting changes.
Q: What aspect of the game do you specialise in coaching?
I coach everyone, at all levels – beginner to aspiring pro and elite ams. I have a particular interest in short game coaching. There are endless possibilities and options to be explored.
Q: What technology do you use in your lessons and how do you believe it helps?
Ball flight and club data are always on hand to verify and help understand certain patterns, and a good video of your swing can sometimes be enlightening. But, having said that, sometimes, less is more!
Q: What three words would best describe you as a coach?
Honest, experienced, knowledgeable.
Q: As a player, what weakness have you struggled with and what did you do to correct it?
My strength is that I have very little in the way of weaknesses. However, there’s a good reason for it. Magic isn’t one of them!
Q: What would you say to a beginner who might be intimidated by / nervous of the idea of taking up golf as a sport?
Just do it! The journey or the destination are largely irrelevant. For me, golf is and always will be a sport which keeps you healthy, lets you travel far, lets you spend valuable time with some decent company and create some lasting memories you’ll never forget.
Q: What life skills do you believe golf teaches a person?
Patience and strength of mind. You’re going to spend plenty of time in your own head. You’ll learn a lot about yourself. Get ready to deal with disappointment!
Q: Favourite course that you’ve ever played?
Shillinglee Golf Club – a parkland 9 hole. It’s where I first played with my Grandad. It’s no longer open but when I drive past the land where it used to be, the memories I have of it and him will never be replaced.
Q: Which course is number one on your bucket list to play / is your dream course to play?
Any good links course. In my opinion it’s golf in its purest form.
Q: Who is your favourite Major Champion of all time?
Tiger obviously! His dominance, his mind-boggling stats and the effect he has had on the game are unmatched. Apart from him, Nick Faldo was a big part of my youth. He’d have to be my idol if I was in a patriotic mood.
Q: Who would join you in your dream fourball?
My Dad, Grandad and Bob Mortimer!
Q: Favourite club in the bag?
Lob wedge.
Q: Best quick golf tip?
‘You only need one good shot a hole!’
STUDENT SUCCESS
Congratulations to Sam Goodway of Cottesmore G&CC who won the Scratch Knockout for the second year running. Sam works on his game with Academy coach, Ashley Jefferies, who is based at Horsham Golf.
Here’s what Sam had to say…
“
Working with Ash over the last two years has really helped elevate my game. I’ve been playing consistently good golf since we started working together and I’ve moved from being a contender in club scratch competitions to winning them!
