Ball Striking Secrets from the Fairway With Lee Wilson

Finding the target from the fairways requires a number of things to happen – a good contact, a good club choice, assessing the lie and conditions correctly and then executing your shot. For me though, the key element is contact and in particular the ‘low point’ of the golf swing.

Low point control is critical in achieving consistent iron play, and refers to where the bottom of the swing arc is. For fairway shots this ideally should be after the ball, meaning you connect with the ball first and then the turf second. This will help you achieve predictable distances, penetrating ball flights with improved compression.

The worst mistake when hitting from the fairway is when the low point is before the ball. This leads to ground first strikes, thin or topped shots and often happens when the player is trying to ‘lift’ the ball.

To make sure that your low point is moving ahead of the ball there are many drills to improve your pressure shift, rotation and shaft lean. Here is the position you should be looking to get to and move past when striking from the fairway.
